There are plenty to choose from so deciding on one can be somewhat difficult. I created a list breaking down each type of tracking devices, along with their pro’s and con’s.
Bluetooth pet trackers are lightweight and compact. They are usually designed as small tags that can be attached to a collar or harness, ensuring that they won’t cause any discomfort or restrict the pet’s movement.
This tracking devices have a limited range of around 100 feet. They are particularly useful for indoor cats that tend to hide in the house (or when staying at AirBnb etc). Usually the smartphone app can show you the distance and direction to the tracker.
Bluetooth devices are generally more budget-friendly. They do not require a monthly subscription fee, unlike some GPS trackers. This can be a significant cost-saving factor for pet owners in the long run.
Bluetooth trackers do not provide as accurate location data as GPS trackers. While they can give a general idea of the pet’s location, they may not be able to pinpoint the exact coordinates. This can make it more challenging to locate a pet in a large or densely populated area.
GPS Trackers
One of the most popular types of pet tracking devices is a GPS tracker. These small, lightweight devices can be easily attached to your pet’s collar and use satellite technology to pinpoint their location. You can even track your pet’s movements in real-time using an app!
Some trackers even allow you to set up virtual boundaries, so you’ll receive an alert if your pet strays too far from home. This is especially useful for escape artists haha
GPS trackers often come with additional features such as activity monitoring. You can track your pet’s daily exercise levels and even set goals to ensure they are getting enough physical activity. This can be especially helpful if your pet is on diet or has a medical condition.
One of the main drawbacks for GPS Trackers is the cost. These devices can be quite expensive, especially when you factor in the monthly subscription fees for the tracking service. This can be a deterrent for some pet owners who are on a tight budget.
Another potential downside is that GPS devices require a strong signal and battery life to function properly. If the device loses connection or the battery dies, you may not be able to track your pet effectively. Additionally, some devices may have limited coverage in certain areas, making them less reliable in rural or remote locations.
Radio Frequency Pet Trackers
One of the biggest advantages of radio frequency pet trackers is that they work in rural areas or places with no cell service. And just like other trackers, radio frequency trackers are often lightweight and compact.
Another pro of radio frequency pet trackers is their long battery life. Depending on the use, they can last for weeks or even months on a single charge. This is particularly beneficial for pet owners who may forget to charge the device regularly or for those who have pets that tend to roam for extended periods of time.
Radio frequency trackers may not provide real-time tracking information. Unlike GPS trackers that can be accessed through smartphone apps, radio frequency trackers often require a separate receiver to locate the pet. This means that owners may need to physically search for their pet using the receiver, which can be time-consuming and less convenient.
